McCain to Suspend Campaign!

Well, I have to say this is a first. I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of anything even remotely similar to this at the presidential level. John McCain just announced he wants to suspend his presidential campaign to return to Washington and work on the market crisis.

This is a bold move and I think it could work for him. Still, postponing Friday’s debate could become problematic. On the other hand, I’m not sure what’s going to happen in the Senate. If Obama agrees to do the same it’s a hit on him. He looks like the follower. If he doesn’t do it, he looks like he doesn’t care. There’s a potential for a lot of damage to Obama no matter what he does.

It’s important though to keep an eye on this. If McCain goes to the Senate and takes a leading roll, which he most likely will, it will be good for him and his campaign. On the other hand, Obama has another problem. He’s not going back to an organization where he’s a senior leader. He’s a junior freshman. If you take a look at the two of them in the context of the U.S. Senate the contrast suddenly becomes stark. I actually think this may be an opportunity for McCain to help himself greatly and hurt Obama at the same time, and all he has to do in the Senate is what he always does.
